When to prune fruit trees

Why timing matters at all
When you prune changes how the tree responds, because it changes what the tree does with its stored energy. In fall, a deciduous fruit tree pulls carbohydrates down into its trunk and roots for the winter. Prune while it's dormant and that reserve stays untouched, so come spring the tree pushes its full store of energy into fewer growing points — the result is vigorous new growth. Prune in summer and you take off leaves that are busy making food, which slows the tree down. In short: dormant pruning tends to invigorate a tree, while summer pruning tends to restrain it.
That one principle explains most timing advice. If a young tree needs to build structure and fill its space, dormant pruning helps. If a vigorous tree is overgrowing its spot or shading its own fruit, a summer cut calms it down. And for a few species, disease — not vigor — sets the calendar.
It's also worth being clear about what timing won't fix: pruning at the perfect moment can't rescue a badly structured tree, and pruning at a slightly off moment won't ruin a healthy one. Timing is a lever you pull on top of sound technique, not a substitute for it. Each winter, ask yourself two questions — does this tree need invigorating or restraining, and does its species have a disease reason to steer clear of the wet season? The answers point you to the right window.
Dormant pruning: apples and pears
Apples and pears are the classic dormant-season trees. Prune them in late winter, in the weeks before spring growth starts. With the leaves gone you can see the whole framework and make deliberate structural cuts; the worst cold has passed, so fresh cuts are less exposed to hard freezes; and the invigorating pull of dormant pruning drives the strong new growth these trees use to build fruiting wood.
A dormant prune has a few main goals: hold the tree's height so fruit stays within reach, build a strong limb structure, cut out dead or damaged wood, and open the canopy so light and air reach the interior. An open canopy isn't only about the crop — it lets leaves and fruit dry faster after rain, which cuts down disease. One firm rule holds across sources: never take more than about a third of the tree in a single year, or you'll trigger a flush of watery, unproductive growth.
Even within the dormant window there's room to fine-tune. Prune in late winter, close to the end of dormancy, and fresh cuts spend less time exposed to the harshest cold — the tree starts healing them almost as soon as growth resumes. Pruning in the depths of very cold weather is best avoided, since freeze injury around fresh wounds is more likely. For most apple and pear growers, aim for a mild spell in late winter: before buds swell, but after the deepest cold has broken.
The exceptions: apricots and cherries
Apricots and cherries — and their relatives like pluots and apriums — are the big exceptions, and here the reason is disease, not vigor. These species are very prone to Eutypa dieback, a fungal disease that slips into fresh pruning wounds while they're wet. The fungus travels in splashing rain and irrigation water, so a cut made in the wet dormant season is an open door for infection.
So prune apricots and cherries in summer rather than winter, during a stretch of dry weather that lets the wounds seal before the wet season returns. Aim to prune before the dry spell ends — often July or August in much of the country — so cuts have several weeks to close ahead of the fall and winter rains. Waiting until dormancy to prune these trees, the way you would an apple, actually raises the infection risk.
Cherries face extra wet-weather pathogens — including bacterial canker and, in cooler climates, silver leaf — that also enter through pruning cuts, one more reason to prune them when the weather is warm and dry rather than cold and damp. The rule for this whole group is simple: prune apricots and cherries only when the rains have stopped and dry weather is expected to follow.
Because the disease risk is real, keep pruning on these species light and purposeful rather than heavy. Build a good framework while the tree is young, then in later years do little more than remove dead, damaged, or crossing wood and thin out crowded growth. Every cut is a potential entry wound, so fewer, well-chosen cuts made in dry weather is the safer way to go. That's the opposite instinct from a vigorous young apple, where more decisive dormant cutting builds the tree.
- Apples and pears: prune in the dormant season, in late winter before growth begins.
- Apricots, cherries, and their hybrids: prune in dry summer weather (often July–August), giving wounds weeks to seal before wet weather sets in, to avoid Eutypa and other wound diseases.

Summer pruning as a tool
Beyond the disease-driven exceptions, summer pruning is a deliberate technique for any tree that's too vigorous. Because it takes off leaves during the growing season, summer pruning trims the carbohydrates a tree can store, so it grows a little more slowly the following spring. Use it to hold height in check, to thin out watersprouts and shading shoots that clutter the interior, and to let more light onto ripening fruit.
Summer pruning has its limits and trade-offs, though. On peaches, for instance, cuts made later than about mid-July no longer sway next year's flower buds. And opening the canopy in high summer can expose previously shaded fruit and bark to sunburn. Treat summer pruning as targeted maintenance — take out the vigorous shoots that shade the interior, and leave the heavy structural work for the dormant season.
Here's an easy way to hold the two seasons in mind: dormant pruning is for building and renewing a tree, summer pruning is for calming and clarifying one. A young tree filling its space gets most of its cuts in winter. An established tree that's running to wood, hiding its fruit in shade, or reaching past the height you can pick benefits from a lighter touch in summer. Many home growers end up doing a little of both across the year, matched to what each tree needs.
Technique, briefly
Whenever you prune, two kinds of cut do the work. A thinning cut removes an entire shoot or branch back to its origin and opens the tree up without provoking a burst of regrowth. A heading cut shortens a shoot to a bud and encourages branching below the cut; heading cuts are discouraged on many ornamental trees, but they're genuinely useful for shaping a young fruit tree. Make your cuts cleanly, just outside the branch collar, and take out dead, diseased, crossing, and inward-growing wood first.
Knowing what each cut does helps you choose your season as well as your target. Because thinning cuts don't provoke a rush of regrowth, they suit both seasons and are the workhorse of a light summer tidy-up. Heading cuts, which spur branching, do their best work in the dormant season on a young tree you're trying to build out. Working through a tree in a set order — dead and damaged wood, then crossing and inward growth, then any height reduction — keeps you from over-cutting and helps you stay under that one-third-per-year ceiling.
Match your tools' cleanliness to the risk: with the wound-disease-prone apricots and cherries especially, working in dry weather and cutting healthy wood before diseased wood limits how easily infection travels through the tree. Sharp, clean tools that leave smooth cuts rather than ragged tears also help wounds close faster — which matters most on exactly those disease-sensitive species.
