How to plant a bare-root fruit tree

Plant a bare-root fruit tree in early spring while it's still dormant, before growth begins. Dig a hole two to two-and-a-half times wider than the roots and only as deep as the roots are long, set the trunk flare even with the soil surface, keep the graft union above ground, backfill with the original soil, water it in, and stake it loosely for the first year. Get it right and a bare-root tree establishes fast — it'll often outgrow a larger potted tree within a few seasons.

When to plant a bare-root tree

Bare-root fruit trees are sold dormant, with no soil around their roots, and they need to go in the ground in spring before growth begins. Planting while the tree is still dormant gives the root system time to re-establish before the tree spends energy pushing leaves and shoots. Nurseries typically ship bare-root stock in late winter or early spring, timed to your area's conditions.

Because the roots are exposed, timing matters more than it does with a potted tree. Plant as soon as the ground is workable and no longer frozen. If you can't plant right away, keep the roots moist and cool — heel the tree into damp soil, or wrap the roots in damp material and store it somewhere cool and shaded — and get it in the ground within a few days.

Choosing the site

A fruit tree stays where you put it for decades, so it's worth getting the site right before you dig. Most fruit trees need full sun — at least six to eight hours a day — to ripen a good crop, so pick the sunniest spot you've got and steer clear of places shaded by large trees or buildings. Less sun generally means less fruit, plus more disease pressure from foliage that stays damp.

After light, the biggest site question is drainage. Fruit trees hate wet feet: plant them in poorly drained soil and they grow poorly, often dying within a few years. Avoid low spots where water puddles after rain, and favor ground where water moves through rather than sitting. Most fruit trees grow well in fertile soil with a pH of roughly 6.0 to 7.5, so a soil test before planting is worth doing — it tells you whether pH or nutrients need attention while you can still fix them easily.

Your site also shapes frost risk. Cold air is heavier than warm air and flows downhill to pool in low-lying areas, so a low spot or the bottom of a slope can turn into a frost pocket that damages spring blossoms. Where you have the option, plant on a gentle slope or higher ground with good cold-air drainage rather than in a depression.

One more thing to plan for before you buy: pollination. Apples, pears, sweet cherries, and many plums are largely self-unfruitful — they can't fruit from their own pollen — and need a second, compatible variety blooming nearby to set a good crop. Most peaches and tart cherries, on the other hand, are self-fruitful and can fruit alone. If your tree needs a partner, the pollinizer should be reasonably close and bloom at the same time, since bees carry the pollen between them. It's much easier to leave room for a second tree now than to discover the need after your first one has been in the ground for years.

Preparing the roots and the hole

Before planting, prune off any damaged or broken roots and soak the root system in a bucket of water for one to two hours, so it goes into the ground fully hydrated. Don't leave the roots soaking for days, though — a couple of hours is plenty.

Dig a hole two to two-and-a-half times wider than the spread of the roots, and only as deep as the roots are long. A wide hole with loosened sides gives new roots an easy path into the surrounding soil; a hole dug too deep lets the tree settle down below its proper level. Roughen the sides of the hole rather than leaving them glazed and smooth.

  • Wide, not deep: width helps roots spread; excess depth causes the tree to settle too low.
  • Loosen the hole's sides so roots can grow outward into native soil.
  • Build a small cone of soil in the bottom and drape the roots over it so they fan out and down.

Planting depth and the graft union

Planting depth is the single thing people get wrong most often. The trunk flare — the point where the trunk begins to widen as it meets the roots — should sit even with the surrounding soil surface. Set the tree so the flare is right at grade, then eyeball it from a couple of angles before you backfill.

On a grafted fruit tree there's a second landmark to watch: the graft (or bud) union, a visible bulge or kink an inch or few above the flare where the fruiting variety was joined to the rootstock. On dwarf and semi-dwarf trees, keep the union 2 to 3 inches above the soil surface, so the fruiting variety can't send its own roots down past the rootstock. Bury the union and the fruiting variety can root above the graft, canceling out the rootstock's dwarfing and disease traits — and defeating the whole point of a size-controlling rootstock.

Backfill with the soil you dug out — skip the fertilizer, compost, and other amendments in the planting hole, which can actually discourage roots from venturing out into the surrounding native soil. Firm the backfill with your hands as you go to knock out air pockets, and water the hole once it's about three-quarters filled and again when it's full, to settle the soil around the roots.

Watering after planting

Water deeply at planting to settle the soil and close up air pockets, then keep the root zone from drying out through that first growing season. A new bare-root tree hasn't yet grown the wide root system it needs to find its own water, so it's counting on you until it establishes.

Rather than watering on a rigid schedule, check the soil once or twice a week and water when the soil around the roots is dry. Deep, infrequent watering coaxes roots to grow down and out; frequent shallow sprinkling keeps them lingering near the surface. A ring of mulch a few inches thick over the root zone — pulled back from the trunk so it doesn't sit against the bark — helps hold moisture and even out soil temperature.

Staking

A newly planted bare-root tree often needs staking for its first year while the roots take hold. Use two or three stakes driven into firm, undisturbed soil outside the planting hole, and tie the trunk with wide, flexible material that holds the tree upright while still letting it move a little. A bit of sway is actually healthy — it prompts the trunk to thicken and strengthen.

Take off all the staking material the following spring, if not sooner. Ties left on too long can girdle the trunk as it grows, and a tree staked too rigidly for too long ends up with a weaker trunk than one that was allowed to flex. One important exception: trees on fully dwarfing rootstocks have weak root systems and generally need permanent support from a stake or trellis for their entire life, not just the first year.

Pruning at planting

It feels counterintuitive, but a newly planted bare-root tree usually benefits from a light pruning right at planting. When a tree is dug for bare-root sale, it loses a big share of its root system, and cutting back the top brings the amount of shoot the tree has to support back into balance with those reduced roots. On top of that, the cuts you make in the first year set the tree's basic framework for the rest of its life.

At a minimum, take out anything dead, broken, or damaged, along with any narrow, weak crotches that would make poor future limbs. Beyond that, formative pruning depends on the shape you're training the tree toward, which varies by species and system — this guide covers technique and timing rather than a variety-by-variety pruning plan. The key thing to hold onto: pruning at planting is normal and helpful, not something to fear.

First-year care

The first year is all about establishing roots, not producing fruit. Keep the tree watered through dry spells, maintain the mulch ring, and keep grass and weeds off the root zone so they don't compete for water. Make sure the graft union stays above the soil line as the backfill settles, and add soil under the flare if the tree starts to sink.

Protect the young trunk over that first winter. The thin bark of a newly planted tree is vulnerable to sunscald and to being gnawed by rodents and rabbits — either of which can girdle and kill a young tree. A light-colored trunk guard or wrap keeps both risks in check; just remember to check on it as the trunk thickens so it doesn't start constricting the growing tree.

Don't worry if a bare-root tree leafs out a little later than established trees nearby — it's busy rebuilding its root system first. If any flowers appear in the first spring, many growers pinch them off so the young tree pours its energy into roots and structure rather than fruit. Give it a full season to settle in, and it'll reward your patience with faster, stronger growth than a pot-grown tree.
