     Prune in late dormancy as buds swell. Japanese plums are trained to an open center; European plums tolerate a central leader. Remove crossing wood and any galled or blackened wood, and cut out black-knot swellings well below the swelling.

     Plums bloom early; open flowers are frost-sensitive and most Japanese plums need a compatible pollinizer blooming at the same time. Bees are active, so extension guidance is to avoid insecticide application during open bloom. Awareness/timing only.

     Thin heavily set Japanese plums to roughly 8–10 cm apart a few weeks after bloom to improve size and prevent limb breakage. European plums and prunes usually need little thinning.

     Pick when fruit reaches full color for the variety and softens slightly at the tip. Japanese types ripen from early-mid summer; European plums and prunes ripen late summer into early fall. Timing shifts by variety and local season.
