The year at a glance

1. April

     Prune persimmons while dormant in late winter, before bud break. Persimmons bear on new growth from last year's wood; keep a strong open framework and remove dead or crossing wood. Brittle wood breaks under heavy crops, so light annual pruning helps distribute the load.

2. May

     Persimmons bloom in late spring, later than most tree fruit, which usually spares them spring frost. Many Oriental varieties set fruit without pollination, while American persimmons are dioecious and need a male tree nearby. Awareness/timing only.

3. June

     Young persimmon trees commonly shed a portion of their fruit in early summer; this natural drop is normal and helps the tree balance its crop. Keep trees evenly watered through this period to limit stress-related drop.

4. October

   • Harvest windowHarvest · Oct 1 – Nov 30

     Persimmons ripen in late fall, often after leaf drop. Non-astringent types (e.g. Fuyu) can be eaten firm; astringent types (e.g. Hachiya) must soften to jelly-ripe before they lose astringency. Clip fruit with the calyx attached; a light fall frost does not harm ripe fruit.

     After harvest and leaf drop, remove any fallen fruit and leaves from beneath the tree to keep the area clean going into winter.
